The Hidden Cost of Cheap Perforated Panels: What I Learned Ordering McNichols Steel

The Quote That Looked Like a Deal

I manage purchasing for a 40-person fabrication and facilities company. When I took over buying in 2020, I thought comparing quotes for perforated metal panels was simple: same gauge, same hole pattern, same finish, lowest price wins. It took a $2,100 savings to prove me wrong.

The order was 180 steel perforated panels — 18 gauge, 0.5-inch round holes, 3/16-inch stagger. The supplier came in $2,100 below the next quote. I checked the specs twice. I approved it. The panels arrived nine days late, with sharp burrs on one lot and edge damage on another. We had to rework 40. Rework sounds simple, but it's not a line item on the original quote.

We've ordered maybe 200 perforated panels from other suppliers since. Probably 180, I'd have to check the system. But that first order taught me more than any of the ones that went smoothly.

What the Base Price Doesn't Tell You

The real problem wasn't the supplier. It was that I didn't know how much of the final cost lives outside the unit price. The base metal is probably 60% of what you'll actually pay. The rest is tolerance, edge condition, packaging, and the cost of answering questions after the order is in production.

That's been my experience with architectural and light industrial panels, not structural load-bearing grating. If you're designing a mezzanine floor, the calculation is different. But for screens, enclosures, and displays, the same principle holds: the quote is only one layer.

Nobody would order a valve stem without specifying thread pitch and stem length. But I ordered perforated panels without specifying edge condition, flatness tolerance, or acceptable burr height. The supplier met the letter of the quote and still gave me parts that didn't fit. That's on me, not just on them.

When a fabricator asks me how to roll a joint in a curved perforated screen, I don't start with the seamer. I start with the panel. If the perforations are too close to the bend line, the metal splits. If the ligament between holes is too narrow, the joint won't hold. A cheap panel supplier won't tell you that because they're not thinking about your application.

Why the Numbers Lied

Here's the thing I had backwards. People think expensive vendors deliver better quality. Actually, vendors who deliver quality can charge more — the causation runs the other way. Suppliers who write clear specifications can charge a fair price because they don't need to hide costs in contingencies. The supplier with the low quote isn't necessarily cheaper; they're just earlier in the conversation.

In our 2024 vendor consolidation project, I compared McNichols steel and perforated panels against three other suppliers. McNichols wasn't the lowest on paper. I still kick myself for not ordering a sample panel before the full production run. A sample would have cost $40 and taken a day. It would have shown me the burrs before I committed $18,000. That $2,400 in rework and expedite fees was avoidable.

Granted, not every low quote ends badly. To be fair, the cheaper supplier had a good reputation and decent reviews. The issue wasn't malice. It was missing definition. I hadn't specified what I needed, and they didn't ask.

The upside of going with that distant supplier was $2,100 in savings. The risk was missing the deadline. I kept asking myself whether $2,100 was worth potentially disappointing our biggest client. It wasn't. But I only realized that after the fact.

What I'd Do Differently

Now I ask a different first question: What's not included? The vendor who lists all fees upfront — even if the total looks higher — usually costs less in the end. I've learned to read the fine print for cut tolerance, flatness, and burr requirements before comparing unit prices.
