McNichols Wire Mesh & Metal Mesh: 6 Checks Before You Order

I work in quality and compliance at McNichols. I review roughly 200 unique product specs a year, and I've rejected about 8% of first-time wire mesh deliveries in the last 12 months, based on my own order review notes. Not because factories are careless. Because the order was underspecified.

Quick note: this article is about McNichols wire mesh and McNichols metal mesh. If you got here looking for hand and stone or frameless shower door installation, this isn't that article. That's exactly the point: a good supplier doesn't pretend to cover everything.

This checklist is for anyone buying McNichols wire mesh: facility managers, contractors, engineers, architects. Use it before you send the PO, not after the truck arrives. There are six checks.

After four years of reviewing specs, I've come to believe that most mesh problems are specification gaps, not manufacturing defects. Use this list to close the gaps.

Check 1: Nail the exact product code, not just 'wire mesh'

From the outside, 'wire mesh' sounds simple. The reality: McNichols' metal mesh catalog (as of January 2025) separates woven wire cloth, welded wire mesh, and architectural mesh. They behave differently.

What I mean by exact product code is the full line from the current catalog: mesh count, wire diameter, alloy, finish, and product family. If a drawing says '304 stainless steel wire mesh', stop. That's not a spec. A 4x4 welded mesh with 0.120-inch wire is not the same as a 100x100 woven cloth with 0.0045-inch wire, even though both get shortened to 'wire mesh'.

If the part number came from an old invoice, verify it against today's catalog. Product codes change. The same drawing can end up with a different product if nobody rechecks the code.

To be fair, a good inside salesperson will ask. But you should know the questions too. The product code on the quote is a commitment, not a suggestion. Confirm it matches the product family you need.

Check 2: Confirm the material and finish for the actual environment

'Stainless steel' is a category, not a grade. 304 and 316 are different animals. 'Galvanized' also depends on method: electro-galvanized, hot-dip, or pre-galvanized material. Each behaves differently in wet or coastal conditions.

Plain carbon steel is the cheapest option, but it's for dry indoor applications. Hot-dip galvanized is better for outdoors. 304 is better still for many wet areas. 316 belongs in coastal or chemical settings. Your project engineer may have a stricter requirement.

It's tempting to think any metal mesh works indoors. But a pool area or a spa with frameless shower doors will punish cheap finishes quickly. If the project also has stone tile, 316 stainless is often the safer call. It costs more now and less later.

I'm not quoting prices here; metal prices move too often. Ask for a written quote with the date and compare quotes in the same month.

Check 3: Give real dimensions and verify squareness

Length and width are obvious. Squareness is the step that gets skipped.

I rejected a batch of 24 panels last year where every panel measured fine on the sides, but the diagonals were off by more than 1/4 inch on a 36-inch panel. They looked fine on the packing slip. They didn't fit the frame. Period.

Looking back, I should have asked for a diagonal check on the pre-production sample. At the time, the CAD drawing looked fine. It didn't show the twist.

So write the tolerance on the PO: width, length, wire diameter, and squareness. If panels need to line up side by side, say so. And send a marked-up drawing. If you need to annotate a PDF, here's how to take a screenshot on Windows: press Windows+Shift+S, then drag to select the area. On a Mac, use Shift+Command+4. Paste it into the email. It beats 'you know what I mean' every time.

Check 4: Define edges and extra fabrication

Raw cut wire mesh is sharp. If the panel is exposed, or people will touch it, you need an edge treatment: folded edge, framed edge, welded edge, or vinyl-bound edge. The mesh opening can be right and the panel can still be wrong for the job.

This is where orders go sideways. The spec lists the mesh pattern but nobody says whether edges are trimmed, bent, or framed. The supplier cuts it. The panel arrives sharp and unpainted. It technically fits, but it's not the intended look or safe to handle.

Edge treatment also changes the actual dimension. A folded edge adds thickness and changes how the panel sits in a channel. If the installation frame is tight, account for that early.

Put mounting holes, notches, bends, weld frames, and edge type on the drawing. This is the boring step. It's also the cheapest issue to fix before production. (Note to self: add an edge-profile field to our standard quote form.)

Check 5: Require certifications and a physical sample

I only believed in material certifications after a shipment of stainless mesh showed rust spots in storage. Without the mill test report, we couldn't prove the actual alloy. The vendor said it was 304. The rust said otherwise.

Put this in the PO before production:

  • Material certification, meaning a mill test report from the producer, not a generic line on an invoice.
  • Finish certification for galvanized, powder-coated, or painted mesh.
  • Weld certification if the mesh is doing anything structural.

If the certification doesn't include a heat number, it's easy to challenge. Ask for the actual chemistry and heat number, not a generic 'complies with ASTM' statement.

If the order is large or the look matters, request a physical sample. A PDF doesn't show stiffness, light reflection, or how the edge feels. Samples are cheap. A 200-panel redo is not.

Check 6: Know when a supplier should say 'no'

Here's the part that isn't in any catalog. A good supplier doesn't pretend to do everything. If you ask me, 'we can do that, no problem' is a yellow flag until it's backed up with details.

'That's outside our lane. Here's who does it well.'

That sentence earns more trust than any fake 'yes'. McNichols wire mesh is for specifiable metal products. It is not a frameless shower door. It is not stone tile. Hand and stone? Different trade. Frameless shower door? Also a different trade. I'd rather lose one line item than recommend a product outside its limits.

If you need fall protection, a load-bearing screen, or a walk-on grating, that's engineering approval territory, not a catalog guess. Don't let anyone skip that step.

This isn't about being unhelpful. It's about doing the work well. A supplier that understands its lane will ask better questions, spec better products, and avoid the expensive surprises.

Three mistakes I keep seeing

1. Ordering 'the same thing as last time' without rechecking the part number. Product lines change.

2. Choosing finish by price instead of environment. The $300 quote is not a bargain when it rusts.

3. Sending a phone photo of a faded drawing. If the writing is unreadable, the spec is unenforceable.

The factory can only ship what the paper says. If the paper doesn't say it, you get whatever the reader thinks you meant. That's the real lesson. Make the paper precise.
