Ordering McNichols Grating? Three Scenarios, Three Different Rules

I've been handling facility maintenance purchasing for 7 years. A big part of that job is ordering metal grating from McNichols — which, honestly, is not a glamorous career highlight. Emergency rule: call, confirm physical stock, write down the rep's name, and pay for the delivery commitment. You're not overpaying — you're buying certainty at the exact moment certainty matters most.

Scenario 2: The Shutdown Window (Scheduled Project)

You have an eight-week window before a planned shutdown. You know what you need. Or think you do.

This is where I made my single most expensive mistake. In September 2022, I ordered 23 pieces of welded bar grating for a mezzanine extension. I specified "1-inch series bar grating" and called it done. That wasn't enough. The bearing bar depth — the dimension that determines load capacity — is a separate spec, and I'd left it at "standard." Standard for that product line did not match our structural engineer's load calculations.

23 pieces, $3,850, all wrong spanning capacity. We caught it when the installation crew tried to fit the first panel. That led to two weeks of internal frustration, three weeks of lost shutdown window, and a conversation with my manager I'd rather forget.

It requires an abrasive blade, tight support along the cut line to prevent chipping, and proper dust control — the fibers are not something you want in your lungs, per the product safety data sheet. I ruined 3 of 4 oversized fiberglass panels on a $540 order. After an hour of rigging a straightedge, I got the fourth one right. The waste: about $430 in material, labor, and blades.

So here's the advice that looks wrong but isn't: on small orders, pay McNichols to cut the pieces to final size.

Yes, the per-panel price jumps 25-40%. On a $700 order, that's maybe $300 more. But you get a factory-cut edge, guaranteed dimensions, and zero waste. For steel grating, field cutting is more forgiving — if the longest dimension is under 24 inches, a zip disc is fine. For fiberglass, and for anything walked on daily, factory-cut every time.

(Note to self: I still waver on this one. The "I'll just cut it myself" voice is loud. It's wrong.)

  • Is your operation affected right now? Equipment down, access blocked, violation notice → Scenario 1. Call, confirm stock, pay for guaranteed delivery.
  • Is there a fixed deadline weeks away? Shutdown, inspection, scheduled construction → Scenario 2. The risk is spec ambiguity. Use the lead time to get loads and materials confirmed on paper.
  • Is it a small, non-critical order? A few panels, no deadline pressure → Scenario 3. Pay the fabrication premium, especially for fiberglass.

None of this is theoretical perfection. These rules are built from 13 documented mistakes, and the checklist version has caught 47 potential errors for our team in the past 18 months — many of which would have been real money down the drain.

Honestly, I'm not sure why it took me so long to adopt this framework. McNichols was never the problem — the reps know their catalog and the products are consistent.
